So, what does the 2027 GMC Terrain hold in store for Leachman Buick GMC customers?
The 2027 GMC Terrain
The 2027 GMC Terrain is a four-door, two-row, five-passenger compact crossover SUV that follows up on a 2026 model year that took home an IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) Top Safety Pick Award.
Complete with the GMC Pro Safety driver-assistance technologies, the 2027 GMC Terrain carries over the redesign from 2025 and largely sticks to what has made the vehicle so beloved by Leachman Buick GMC Customers.
Powering the 2027 GMC Terrain is an impressive 1.5-liter Turbocharged 4-cylinder engine with plenty of kick thanks to its 175 horsepower and 203 pound-feet of torque. This is married to an 8-speed automatic transmission and is available with front-wheel drive (FWD) or all-wheel drive (AWD).
This powertrain not only provides the 2027 GMC Terrain with plenty of pickup, but the fuel efficiency is excellent with an EPA-estimated 28 mpg on the highway.
- 1.5-Liter Turbocharged 4-Cylinder Engine: 175 hp, 203 lb-ft of torque and 1,500-pound maximum towing capacity.
Herein marks the biggest change for 2027: GMC has made all GMC Terrain models and trims with an 8-speed automatic transmission, doing away with the previous year’s CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) transmission.
Transmission Change
While the FWD 2026 models used a CVT and AWD 2026 models used the 8-speed automatic transmission, GMC decided that all 2027 models will now use the 8-speed automatic transmission. This is across all trims and regardless of the drivetrain (FWD or AWD).
Reason for Change
While the CVT is known for providing good fuel economy, smooth acceleration, and simpler mechanical operation, it provides a less engaging driving experience compared to the 8-speed automatic transmission. In addition, the CVT can often sound louder during higher acceleration, which results in higher RPMs.
Ultimately, the CVT is not ideal for towing and certainly not ideal for the type of spirited, fun-to-drive spirit that the 2027 GMC Terrain has with the 8-speed automatic transmission.
Moving to the 8-speed automatic transmission for 2027 provides several benefits for drivers. First, it means more responsive shifting. Drivers will certainly feel the change. Second, it provides better feel and responsiveness during acceleration. Third, it’s an upgrade in refinement, and finally, it provides greater overall performance regardless of FWD or AWD models.
- More traditional and responsive shifting
- Better feel during acceleration
- Improved refinement
- Greater consistency between FWD and AWD models
What Remains Unchanged for the 2027 GMC Terrain
GMC certainly knows what works well for the GMC Terrain, and the 2027 model year certainly keeps the momentum going from 2026. That means having the same great interior and human-centric cockpit.
That’s an interior defined by an incredible 15-inch multicolor HD digital infotainment touchscreen with navigation. This is then combined with an expansive 11-inch driver information cluster perfectly positioned on a center stack with easy access to the multicolor HD touchscreen and available HD surround vision system.
- 15-inch multicolor HD digital infotainment touchscreen
- Premium GMC Infotainment System
- 11-inch driver information cluster
- Six-speaker audio system
Along with these incredible features, GMC has kept the six-speaker audio system and paired it with the Premium GMC Infotainment System. This means Leachman Buick GMC customers can enjoy wireless Apple CarPlay®, Android Auto™, SiriusXM capability, and seamless smartphone connectivity.
